11 Ways to Make It Through a Tough Mental Health Day

We’ve all been there- something incredibly disruptive happens, and it completely throws off your day. We’ve all had those tough mental health days, and more often than not, you’re counting down the minutes to when you can go to sleep and let it just END.

But I believe that there are things that we can do to effectively make it through those tough mental health days with some bright moments to reflect on.

Take a look at 11 ways that you can make it through your hard mental health days and end them with peace.

  1. Make Time For Self Care

First things first, one of the best things you can do on a tough mental health day is to make time for self-care. Slow things down and enjoy some relaxation. Maybe you treat yourself to a massage, or perhaps you draw yourself a bubble bath and enjoy a good book. Or hey! Maybe you snuggle up on the couch and binge your favorite show.

It’s going to look different for everyone. Whatever self-care looks like for you, now is the time to give yourself some space for that.

  1. Get A Quick Workout In

When we exercise, our body releases endorphins that trigger a positive feeling. If you have time, a quick workout is a great way to get your mind off of things and get some much-needed (all natural!) happiness.

Now let’s be real- we’re not all avid gym-goers. I’m not saying that you need to dedicate two hours to rigeous weight lifting or sprinting. Head over to Pinterest and search for easy 15 minute workouts, or go out for a quick jog or a brisk walk. A simple workout will absolutely do the trick!

  1. Give Yourself a (Small) Project

Sometimes, all you need is something to keep you busy. Look around and consider what small project you can give yourself to keep your hands and mind busy.

Are you in the office? Consider rearranging the furniture in your space, tidy your desk, or clear out your personal inbox (if you’re anything like me, you have thousands of emails waiting to be archived.)

Are you at home? Reorganize your pantry. Sort your closet by color. Get rid of old leftovers in your fridge. Clean out your car.

Whatever project you choose, going with an easily attainable task is a good way to help you feel productive and get out of your head.

  1. Say Your Affirmations

Affirmations are powerful phrases that you say to yourself, preferably on a daily basis, that can help you feel powerful and capable. If you find that you’re having a tough mental health day, consider saying your affirmations. While they’re normally recited in the morning or evening, it is absolutely fine to call on them at any time of day.

One easy way to remember your affirmations and keep them top of mind is to have affirmation stickers. You can put them on your mirror, laptop, phone case, or tumbler. That way you can see them throughout the day and remember how amazing you are.

  1. Prioritize Your Meals

It’s far too easy to let time get away from us during the day, especially when you’re having a tough mental health day. Making sure that you’re fueling yourself and prioritizing your meals is a great way to make it through those harder days.

I try to always keep a snack in my purse for when I’m on the go, as well as a drawer full of snacks in my desk at work. Another great food trick for tough mental health days is to treat yourself to a meal at your favorite restaurant! Take yourself out for a yummy, indulgent meal.

  1. Drink Water

I have a friend who’s mom always said that, if you’re feeling sick or grumpy, you should drink a glass of water, give yourself 15 minutes, and then see how you’re feeling. Nine times out of ten, it did the trick.

I’m telling you, there is so much power in staying on top of your water intake! I know it seems like such a small thing, but it makes a big difference. Trust me on this one.

  1. Take a Walk Outside

Get your body moving and get some fresh air. Whether it’s a 45 minute walk through a park or on a trail or you’re just walking to the mailbox to get your mail, getting outside is a great way to make it through a tough mental health day.

If you’re trying to get in a longer walk, consider looking for a happy playlist you can listen to, or a good podcast to keep you busy. There are tons of great podcasts about mental health that you could listen to that are sure to help!

  1. Sleep It Off

Let’s be real- when that tough mental health day comes around, one of the first thoughts you’ll have is ‘I just want to go to sleep.” And while this may not always be effective, sometimes it’s good to give yourself some time for a quick nap.

There’s a phrase that people tell newly married couples, that they should never go to bed angry. I could not disagree more. More often than not, whatever you’re fighting about late at night is going to feel much smaller and less overwhelming in the morning.

I think the same applies to whatever burden is keeping you down on hard days. Maybe all you need is a little sleep, and when you wake up, the problem will feel less overwhelming and you will feel more empowered to make it through the rest of the day.

  1. Write It Out

Is writing your thing? Consider writing out your thoughts and feelings on what is causing your tough mental health day. Often, it’s difficult to articulate what we’re feeling until we’re able to write things down.

So grab a notebook or open a new doc on your computer and start writing. Once you have everything in front of you, it will be much easier to decide how to proceed.

  1. Talk It Out

Similar to taking time to write everything out, talking things out is a great way to make it through a tough mental health day. Sit down with your partner or a trusted friend and let them know that you’ve had a hard day and you need to talk about it.

Before you dive into the details of it all, be sure to clarify what you need from them in this conversation. Are you simply looking for a listening ear, or do you need some advice on how to move forward? I promise you that they will appreciate the heads up on what your expectations are.

  1. Allow Yourself to Feel

And last but not least, one of the best ways to make it through a tough mental health day is to allow yourself to feel your feelings. Too often, we resort to stuffing our feelings down and powering through the day, which often leads to crashing at the end of the day. Give those big feelings the space they need (and deserve).
